Q&A with Bronwyn Baird - Associate Director at Deloitte Private

How long have you been at Deloitte and why did you join?

I arrived at Deloitte Christchurch as part of the graduate intake of 2002 so coming into my 13th year at Deloitte. Those in my year group came and went but I stayed on.

I knew I wanted to be an accountant from about my sixth form year at school and took a shine to Deloitte through the recruitment process and the Deloitte people I met. I was also thankful they offered me a job at all when I left my interview and realised I still had the price-tag hanging off my new suit jacket!

What is your role and what does it entail?

I’m an Associate Director in Tax & Private. I’m lucky to deal with a wide array of clients but have some high wealth families that consume a lot of my time. In some cases I get to deal with three generations of one family and have done so for the last 11 years. I have a number of clients in the property sector which currently provides some interesting scenarios with the Canterbury rebuild well underway.

What part of your role gives you the most satisfaction?

Making a difference for clients and their businesses. Meeting and helping to develop the new generation of accountants and business advisors coming through and the ability to forge relationships and get involved in the lives of clients families I’ve been dealing with for many years.

If you weren’t doing this for a living what would you be doing?

If I didn’t need to feed myself and put a roof over my head I would be doing something with horses, probably running a breeding establishment. If I was ever to retrain I’ve always thought it would be to do something in the property sector, either property management or valuation.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

Horse-riding - I have four horses, two of which I compete with over summer on the A&P show circuit. I have a life-style block 20km West of Christchurch so the upkeep of that keeps me busy too.

If you could learn one new skill this year, personally or professionally, what would it be?

Probably not achievable ‘this year’ but I’ve always dreamed of doing an MBA. On a personal level probably learning to play polo.

I never thought I would ... while at Deloitte.

Help plan a clients wedding for them.
