Wildly successful entrepreneur, Jay Goodey has been part of our Deloitte Private Club since it began two years ago. We got his thoughts on how he's found it and what it's given him
Here's a little background for you... Jay Goodey, director of online store Onceit, set up his website with $20,000 savings in 2010 when he was just 22. It sold designer clothing, homeware, jewellery and skincare products and was an 'invite-only' website.
Nowadays the site gets between 25,000 and 35,000 visitors a day and has was 7th on our Fast 50 list in 2013 and 48th on our 2014 list. Pretty impressive huh?
Jay is also a member of our Auckland Deloitte Private Club that meets monthly. It offers business owners a chance to network, bounce ideas of each other and gain expert advice from world-class business leaders. So we sat down with him to see how the club has helped him out on his business journey and what he'd say to others considering it.
Why did you join initially?
I was asked to come by Deloitte staff that I met through the Fast 50 and I thought it could be worth checking out. Sometimes these sort of things can be quite contrived but I quickly realised it actually had a really good atmosphere with good people.
What’s been the biggest takeaway overall since joining the club?
I've met some really interesting people across a wide range of industries. It’s good at getting you out of your industry click and meeting other people. You realise everyone is dealing with similar issues and know that your business doesn’t have to be so lonely after all.
What’s been the most helpful session or who’s been the most helpful speaker in your opinion?
I thought Victoria from Xero was really insightful as she seemed to have vast experience in a lot of areas. Derek Handley was great as well and I left with a lot to think about in terms of the social good businesses can achieve.
What have you gained since attending DPC in terms of what you can offer your staff?
Talking to other business owners and managers you find yourself picking up bits that have worked for them in terms of running their teams. Hopefully I have become a better leader because of the information shared from my group.
How have you found the networking opportunities?
In terms of a network it’s pretty exceptional and I have used various services from the group which have been beneficial.
What would you say to others thinking of joining the DPC?
I was pretty skeptical at the beginning as to whether it would be worthwhile but with the quality of the individuals there I quickly became a convert and really look forward to catching up every month. Give it a go, it may not be for everyone but I think most business leaders will benefit from the group!
