Unlocking the keys to innovation

We were lucky enough to have leading global expert on innovation effectiveness, Larry Keeley, presenting at our Auckland Private Club on Monday.

Larry, who is also a Deloitte Consultant, gave a one and half hour presentation teaching business owners how to create game changing breakthroughs at a fraction of the cost and risk that efforts demanded just a few years ago.

Larry is a firm believer that innovation these days is less about primary invention and much more about elegant integration.

His talk focussed on those companies who are integrating exceptional business models with exceptional customer experiences such as Uber and Airbnb. Notably saying that neither of these companies have reinvented the wheel when it comes to products, they’ve just found a great way of integrating already used technologies.

“Successful innovators, innovate beyond products and integrate multiple types,” says Larry.

“People think to be innovative you have to be creative – NO – you have to be disciplined.”

He also touched on the ‘big data’ phenomenon that many business owners seem intimated by. He explained that no matter what size your business, gaining data and analysing it is crucial to businesses.

“You have little chance of success without insight,” explains Larry, citing that USA’s 2013 America’s Cup team came back from a 9-1 losing streak to win the cup, primarily by using the latest analytics to make changes to the team.

A big thanks to Callaghan Innovation for bringing Larry to New Zealand and for the chance to hear his thoughts. It was an enlightening talk that we’re sure everyone took something away from.
